manufacturer of BlackBerry smartphones has hired another former coworker of its new chief executive to lead the global sales team as part of its recent efforts towards a strategy for recovery.

The Canadian company said Eric Johnson will report directly to John Chen, who took office in early November after the BlackBerry ruled out a campaign to be sold.

Johnson, who is president of global sales, previously worked as a senior executive at SAP AG and Sybase.

Chen rejuvenated Sybase before managing the company’s integration with SAP in the wake of an acquisition in 2010.

BlackBerry made other staff changes since the entry of Chen, including the hiring of a director for its business devices deficit and replacing its chief financial officer.

BlackBerry withdrew largely from business phones for consumers, highly competitive. The company, instead, is turning to corporations, governments and other large customers that were at the root of their initial success.
