The BlackBerry fired 250 people in research and development division, while trying to re-establish itself as the leading smartphone maker.
As reported by TechCrunch, all affected employees were associated with a new product that was being tested at the company’s factory in Waterloo, Ontario.
A spokesman for the company said changes were made to help BlackBerry streamline product development.
“I can confirm that the BlackBerry said on Tuesday 250 employees are about to be released from Waterloo”, said Lisette Kwong, BlackBerry, adding that “employees were part of the new product Testing Facility, a department that supported the production of smartphones. “
Lisette Kwong also explained that the collective dismissal is “part of the next phase of recovery plan to increase efficiency and expand the company correctly in the face of new opportunities for the mobile computing. “
A wave of redundancies at the company began earlier this month when Richard Piasentin, managing director of U.S. business was dispensed.
